FAQ

Here are answers to some of the questions we’re most often asked. We know that starting therapy can be a big step, and it’s important that you feel a sense of comfort and connection from the beginning. We offer a complimentary 15-minute consultation call to answer any questions you may still have, and to help us both get a sense of whether this feels like the best space for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often will sessions occur?

You and your therapist will decide the frequency of sessions. This can be adjusted as your need for support increases or decreases.

If I find this is not for me, am I committed?

No, not at all. We hope you love working with us, and we are always open to hearing how we can best support you! If we are not the best fit, we can help you find another therapist who is. If you decide you are not ready for therapy, you are always welcome back!

There are so many therapists out there, why you?

As a small practice, we are able to give you our full attention. We send you notes of encouragement when we know you have something big coming up. We answer your emails and phone calls promptly. We are happy to connect with your other providers, schools, and hold sessions with you and other people in your life. We truly care about you!

How do you make sessions feel collaborative?

So many things! Checking in to see if something specific would feel most helpful that session. Asking if something would feel comfortable and safe to explore before jumping in. Listening to feedback about your experience in session, and checking in periodically to make sure it still feels like a good fit. As well as making sure we are going in a direction that feels meaningful to you.

Where do sessions take place?

Sessions can take place in our Fairfax office, or virtually through a HIPAA compliant platform. You are not required to commit to one or the other. We are happy to accommodate whatever works best for you that week!

I am nervous about starting therapy! Can you help?

Many of our clients are nervous when starting therapy! If you are comfortable, let us know if there is anything specific you are nervous about. We have many ideas on how to make you more comfortable in sessions.

What can I expect in the first session?

The first session is a time for you and your therapist to get to know each other, discuss what brings you to therapy, and any goals you may have. No idea where you want to start? Not a problem! We will help you figure it out.

Therapy has not worked for me in the past. Will it never work?

We see a lot of clients who have tried therapy before and did not like it or found it unhelpful (sometimes even hurtful). Just like people, each therapist brings their own personality, skills and life experience to the session. Not all will be a good fit for you! We try hard to make sure connection and open communication is established from the beginning. We want therapy to feel collaborative and safe before anything else.

How long are sessions?

Sessions are around 50 minutes. We offer longer sessions for times you need more support.

How do I know if I need therapy?

There is a myth that therapy is only for those who are really struggling with their mental health. While it is helpful for those individuals, it is also helpful when you are needing support, wanting to better understand yourself and wanting to connect with your body, feelings and emotions on a deeper level. You can also attend without knowing exactly why you need to be here. All are welcome!

I don't want to do EMDR. Do I have to if we work together?

Nope! EMDR is just a tool used in therapy. If it does not feel right to you there is no pressure to use it.

Are you one of those therapists that just nod their head the entire session?

Absolutely not! We are here to ask questions, help you make connections, brainstorm ideas, provide support, and most importantly, build a trusting relationship with you.
